Partnership with the Global Fishing Watch

Our lab is honored to announce a global alliance with the Global Fishing Watch (http://www.globalfishingwatch.org), collaborating on developing methods on detecting and identifying illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishery with the arts of computer science. 

 

This year we will be working on with detection of ghost transshipment under information asymmetry conditions. Usually, when two different entities contact, only they know what has happened. Remote sensors are lucky if they pick up both signals, but most of the time, only one party (or none) is available. With the assistance of multiple information fragments, we seek to rebuild what has happened and learn about their behavior.

 

We will be recruiting student candidates to conduct this research with our team. Candidates who are interested in computer science, ocean (Earth) science, and fisheries science, and be able to accept tedious programming assignments are welcome to talk with us!
